Poor Joseph and his performance anxiety.

Oh, those wacky New Zealanders. This is a billboard for a “progressive” church there. Managed to stay up a couple of hours before being defaced. I kinda like it.

I just think this is hysterical. I love the look on Mary’s face too.

Too bad they didn’t have that little blue pill back then…

“It’s flying in the face of our 2,000-year-old beliefs…”
Wait, what beliefs?
Nobody ever told me in church that Joseph and Mary never had sex — I always assumed that they had normal sexual relations.
Nobody ever told me in church exactly HOW God impregnated Mary. The closest you get is Luke 1:26-35.
I think it’s entirely possible that when the Holy Spirit “came upon her,” she felt something wonderful happen.
What does “the power of the Most High will overshadow you” mean anyway?
I mean, srsly.
Okay, I understand that we’re supposed to revere Mary and Joseph. But the whole point is, they were human beings so they probably had some disappointing sex at some time.
I think it’s a great poster, and I applaud that church.

Yeah that’s the thing of it, supposedly Mary was pure to the day she died. BUT supposedly Jesus had brothers and sisters. How the heck did they come along if Mary was a virgin her whole life?

As I understand it, it’s sort of controversial. I guess it’s a tenet of the Roman Catholic (and some protestants — Lutheran, maybe?) faith that Mary remained a virgin forever and that anything in the bible referring to Christ’s brothers or sisters was just meaning like “brother in Christ” or “sister in the faith” or perhaps step-brothers/sisters (kids by Joseph’s previous wife) or even cousins, and not actual blood-kin-type brothers/sisters by Mary and Joseph themselves. There’s a pretty good essay stating basically, “Duh, of COURSE Mary had sex with Joseph and had other children” here:

I guess that’s the 2,000-year-old belief, although I don’t know that the Roman Catholic church started out with the belief of a permanently virginal Mary 2,000 years ago. I’m betting that belief came along somewhat later — like in the second century? with the Nativity of Mary? — okay, no idea. Maybe it has been 2,000 years. Time does fly.

Wait! If you take this in the context of Joseph not being able to follow God’s Act then Mary WAS still a virgin!
This billboard isn’t saying they HAD sex, just that they tried. This is just illustrating WHY Mary was still a virgin.

It wasn’t until I saw the first story about this billboard that I’ve even heard of the “forever virgin” concept. There is no biblical basis that I’ve heard for Mary being a virgin for her entire life, why people believed she was is baffling. The only argument that says she did relies on non-biblical traditions, and contrived arguments that the brothers aren’t biological brothers, despite Mary being said as being the mother of Jesus’ brothers in other passages. I’m not even sure what the theological point is of making Mary a virgin til death despite being properly married, other than maybe a suggestion that Catholicism regards sex as dirty and impure. If that’s not a way to mess people up and frustrate them, then I don’t know what is.
