If you haven’t heard, Guillermo Del Toro has decided to leave as director for The Hobbit because of prolonged delays affecting his other work. Like…. At the Mountains of Madness? Maybe? Hopefully? AtMoM is my favorite Lovecraft story, and I would love a proper, true to spirit movie adaptation. Especially with such quotes as “ATMOM is a delicate project to push through a studio: no love interest, no female characters, no happy ending…” Fuck yeah. A true mythos telling, big budget, top director, and only teased for 8 years!

So, sorry hobbittisses…. But there’s another master calling.

Hopefully.

If you would like to read At the Mountains of Madness, it along with his other works are in the public domain and can be read online at The HP Lovecraft Archive. If you would like the dead tree form, my favorite Lovecraft Editions are The Thing on the Doorstep and Other Weird Stories (Contains ATMOM), The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories (The most heard of if not read), and The Dreams in the Witch House and Other Weird Stories. All are part of the Penguin Classics collection, and are annotated by an authority on Lovecraft, adding a perspective of his writings based on the times. I actually have them sitting in front of me. I’ve bought several copies of this edition over the years and given them out as gifts.

Loltheist and I watched it many years ago on DVD. Let me assure you, there is no need to see it in HD. Really.

Oddly enough, it’s a dollar cheaper on Blu-Ray. This means something I’m sure.

Much can be said of Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter. It’s a movie I’ve meant to mention since the site opened. I don’t think today is the day we post about it in depth, but suffice it to say, if you like bad movies… Well, you’ll probably really enjoy JCVH. I mean, how can you not like a movie with lesbians and a mexican wrestler taking on the forces of darkness with JC, and that is a musical.

ETA: It should be noted it has one of the best back covers of all time.

The second coming is upon us, and Jesus has returned to Earth. But before he can get down to the serious business of judging the living and the dead, he has to contend with an army of vampires that can walk in the daylight. Combining Kung-fu action with Biblical prophecy and a liberal dose of humor, the film teams the Savior with Mexican wrestling hero El Santos against mythological horrors and science gone mad and also manages to address contemporary sexual politics. And did we mention that it’s a musical? This sure ain’t Sunday school.

Submitted by Rowan. A long, long time ago, and held for this magical day.

Today is the 25th anniversary of the release of Ghostbusters. Being a child of the 80s, Ghostbusters is a deeply ingrained memory of awesomeness from my childhood (such as I was ever a child). Hell, I remember back in the dawn of the age of VCRs, watching Ghostbusters on a first generation VHS player…

Next week (on the 16th) a cleaned up edition of Ghostbusters on Blu Ray is coming out, and I’m both tempted and dreading the thought of revisiting what surely can’t hold up after this long…

On the other hand, I am totally getting Ghostbusters The Video Game. That it was created in the first place was unlikely. From getting Bill Murry to not only sign off, but participate, to getting the entire cast (minus Sigourney Weaver). Then just as the trailers were starting to appear for launch, a sudden and tumultuous cancellation by Activision Blizzard (Oh Blizzard, how could you merge with Activision?) almost scuttled it in the 11th hour. Only to be saved by Atari, Atari, a brand that everyone seems to have owned by this point. Here’s to hoping Activision Blizzard gets schooled for turning down what hopefully will be a long overdue awesome game that makes a mint. Well awesome except for the Wii version. Poor little Wii.

Let’s also hope it’s a total success because it may trigger a new movie.

Now if I could only justify spending $200+ for the complete dvd set for the animated Real Ghostbusters series, which was one of my favorite cartoons. Coincidentally, years later I discovered some of my favorite episodes were written by J Michael Straczynski, of Babylon 5 fame.

Here’s a blank copy if you would like to make your own caption to celebrate the occasion.

They have a spiffy website too.

We tend to agree, so here it is. Sadly, we won’t make a dime off of it, but anyone willing to take up the habit deserves something for their troubles. Available from their website or CDBaby. Stop by either to listen to clips.
